Snapped component

The piece may have failed through overloading leading to brittle or ductile failure, or through fatigue failure that has led to ultimate failure. An inspection of the fracture face will shed light on this, so it is best to keep this face from any further corrosion or damage.  Further assessment of the loads experienced and the component design by an appropriately qualified mechanical engineer can assess whether the piece was correctly designed or suffered some form of operational abuse.
